The first time I had an avocado was memorable and it would be roughly 7 years before I would eat another one. 

I turned 9 shortly after we arrived in Germany. All the immigrants were moved around from town to town 3 times in a matter of months before temporarily settling into a small village named Burgsalach. 

The idea of moving from Romania to Germany was exciting but also very scary and it took some time to acclimate. Once we'd arrived in Burgsalach, where I would spend the next 4 years of my life, we were housed in a large hostel like place. There was one kitchen and one bathroom that roughly 7 families had to share. Not an ideal situation but it was fine.

As a child, accommodations didn't bother me much. My family was given a 2 room space (I'm hesitant to call it an apartment), which was actually one of the larger units. Aside from the time I had chicken pox and was basically quarantined inside, I hardly spent any time there. I was used to small living but this was really small. The kind of space that brings on claustrophobia when looking back. But at the time, we were just happy to have left the post revolution mess in Romania so anything was better. It was our temporary home until we were to move to a real apartment. 

Most of the time, I bopped around the village, playing with neighborhood kids and those living in the house. While there was plenty of prejudice against the new comers, for the most part children were friendly. The trouble was the language barrier. It took some time to pick up German so I found myself gravitating towards the Romanian kids in the house, since I could actually communicate with them.

There, I met Alina. She was 14 and in my eyes, practically an adult. She wore cool jewelry and her clothes looked nothing like mine. My wardrobe back then looked like the 80s threw up on the 90s and some accidentally splashed on me. But I digress. 

One day, Alina asked me to come over as she wanted me to try this fruit she'd recently been introduced to. Hesitant but curious, I took a bite. A wave of disappointment washed over me. I guess I was expecting something familiar. Maybe like an apple or a pear, but this? This was nothing like that. I decided then, avocado wasn't for me. I couldn't have predicted then that I would be eating avocado almost every day of my life in my adult years. 

The way I made my way back to the avocado was through guacamole. Avocado was different this time. I was different.  

Unless you get a really good store bought guacamole, home made tastes much, much better and is very simple to make. All you need is red onion, avocado, lime juice, salt and cilantro.

  • chill time: optional 30 minutes 
  • makes: 4-6 servings

Ingredients

  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp lime juice
  • 1 tbsp very finely chopped red onion
  • 1 heaping tbsp freshly chopped cilantro

Equipment

  • medium mixing bowl
  • cling wrap

Directions

Cut avocados in half. Remove pit. Spoon out the fleshy part into bowl along with lime juice and mash well with a fork. Add the rest of ingredients and mix well. 

Cover with cling wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes to let all the flavors come together. Serve right away.
