Holidays are almost upon us. Everything has been exploding with pumpkin all around me. Pumpkin lates, pumpkin bread, muffins, cakes, etc. You know where I'm going with this. I realized one of the most utilized spices for all this pumpkin stuff is your good old basic pumpkin pie spice. The trouble is that everyone is buying it this time of year and two of my local stores were sold out of it. So instead of wasting time and energy chasing down a tub of spice, I decided to make my own. 

I happen to be a spice lover/insane hoarder and have a lot of them. If I need to make any spice combination from scratch, chances are I can. 

Having a wide array of spices on hand is always a good idea, in my humble opinion. And the beauty is that they last and last. The truth is, not all spices will be utilized at the same rate but having them on hand in case of emergencies always pays off. 

When it comes to price, it's worth shopping around. If you're going to go to upscale markets looking for them, you'll break the bank so I get most of my spices at my local farmers market. There's a stand that has a wide array of them at a reasonable price too. If not, you can always order them online as they're significantly cheaper in bulk. 

This recipe always calls for allspice and since I didn't have any on hand (shockingly), I decided to just make my own while I was at it and combine it into the recipe. 

So again, if you're a spice lover like me, you will already have these on hand. All you have to do is combine and store in a jar.

pumpkin pie spice

  • Prep time: 2 minutes

  • Cooking time: none

  • Yields: 8 1/2 tsp

Ingredients

  • 4 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 3 tsp ground ginger

  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves

  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg

Equipment

  • small bowl

  • storage jar

  • small spatula or spoon

Directions

Combine all ingredients and store in spice jar in a dry cool place. 


 You're ready to make your favorite Thanksgiving dessert and find yourself without pumpkin pie spice. No problem - with just 4 ingredients you can simply make your own.
